Description

In the recent CMS QSO memo 22-02-ALL there was a very specific indication that there would be increased scrutiny on antipsychotic usage during the survey process. This three-part series facilitated by Linda Farrar, RN, LNHA will focus on the risk that Antipsychotic use poses to residents with dementia, guidance on dealing with difficult behaviors including avoiding triggers, and the process of working with physicians and physician extenders to reduce the use of off-label antipsychotics.

This is a 3-part series. Sessions are held on the following dates and times.

February 10, 2022 –This 75-minute session will cover an overview of changes in the brain related to dementia and regulations related to caring for residents experiencing dementia and the risk of antipsychotic use for dementia residents

Learning Objectives for this session:

Participants will understand the guidance and intent of Federal and State regulations for improving dementia care including dementia training requirements

Participants will understand changes in the brain leading to dementia and basic information about different kinds of dementia

Participants will understand the risk of use of off-label use of antipsychotics for residents experiencing dementia

February 17, 2022 – This 75-minute session covers dealing with difficult behaviors...some person-centered, individualized interventions, root cause analysis to determine the specific individualized triggers and how to help staff intentionally avoid those triggers

Learning Objectives for this session:

Participants will be able to verbalize the value of determining the triggers for dementia-related behaviors to assist staff to intentionally avoid those triggers for residents experiencing distressing symptoms of dementia through effective root cause analysis

Participants will be able to verbalize how to determine individualized interventions to decrease distress for residents experiencing symptoms of dementia

Participants will be able to verbalize the importance of documentation and effective care planning processes to assist care partners to assist residents who experience dementia related symptoms

February 24, 2022 – In this 75 minute session, Linda will cover processes and procedures to assist with working with the physicians and extenders to reduce the off-label use of antipsychotics.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will verbalize understanding of the importance of strong communication with physicians, physician extenders and family members related to residents experiencing symptoms of dementia using evidence-based tools

Participants will verbalize understanding of working closely with the facility's consultant pharmacist to assist residents experiencing dementia-related symptoms

This is a 3 week sessions, which runs on Thursdays from 1:00PM CST to 2:15PM CST. 2/10/2022 2/17/2022 2/24/2022
